Joey Bruno’s Top Ten Favorite Pokemon!

Writer's picture: Joey BrunoJoey Bruno

As my Living Dex journey has concluded and Pokemon Sword and Shield have been released, I felt like I needed to gather all the Pokemon I have acquired and choose who are my favorites. Some of these Pokemon were on my teams, some weren’t. My criteria for picking these Pokemon were how important were they in my own history in Pokemon, their design, their personality, and their own backstory.

1) Swampert

My go-to starter line in the Hoenn games, which was my heaviest played set of Pokemon games as a child. Swampert is my favorite choice mostly for sentimental value. However, an added bonus is that it is resistant to Electric types but quite weak against Grass types.

2) Breloom

This is my favorite Grass-type I believe. However, it also might be my favorite Fighting-type to this day. It has been through many journeys in the Hoenn region which makes it special enough to be on this list. Every time I picked a Mudkip as my Hoenn starter, I knew I would always pick up a Shroomish to counteract the Water typing. Those two have been very sentimental in my Pokemon history.

3) Espeon

Espeon could be a favorite in part to Pokemon Colosseum where your two starters are itself and Umbreon. When I was planning out my team for HeartGold, there were two guarantees of who would be on my team; Espeon and Crobat. Espeon is definitely my favorite Pokemon from Johto I would say. Umbreon is pretty great, but Espeon is so much fun to use with the variety of moves it can learn. If you want a beefy Espeon who just attacks, you will have a good time. If you want a defensive wall Espeon who attacks but also can stand its ground, you will also have a good time, so a true win-win.

4) Sylveon

When Fairy types were announced to be a thing, the only Fairy-type that intrigued me enough to be on my own team, at the time, would be Sylveon, Eevee’s Fairy evolution. The majestic elegance to its design is matched so well with the already known Eeveelutions and Eevee itself. Sylveon will definitely be on a few teams of mine for the future.

5) Alolan Ninetales

When the Alolan forms were revealed, all of them truly were eye-catching. Alolan Exeggutor was in my team for Let’s Go Pikachu, but my favorite Alolan form even before that is Alolan Ninetales. It is majestic and beautiful with its snow-colored mane. The type combination is also really interesting to reinvent Ninetales. It is an Ice/Fairy type which gives it a very good advantage against Dragon types. The differences that all the region exclusive Pokemon bring are really an interesting concept I am glad Game Freak is continuing with Sword & Shield.

6) Hydreigon

One of my favorite designed Pokemon ever. It is a serpent dragon essentially, which is an awesome concept on its own. However, it is also a Dark/Dragon-type. Both of these types are close to being a favorite type of mine or at least having some of my favorite Pokemon in general. I still have not used one ever, but hopefully, that changes eventually!

7) Kingdra

Another one of my favorite Dragon-types. This time, maybe because of the connection between Misty and her Horsea and the memories bring through me watching the anime. The design itself makes Kingdra a beautiful creature in general, but still having a Dragon tenacity. Blue is usually associated with peace and calmness and Kingdra is the essence of being peaceful and exuding a calm demeanor.

8) Decidueye

Decidueye was my favorite final form of all three starters in Alola. Grass-Ghost is not a new type combination, but it definitely is an interesting one! Owls are also one of my favorite animals, so that is just an added plus to how awesome Decidueye is. The concept of an owl-ghost creature, who happens to be an archer is beautiful. Bless Game Freak’s souls for creating one of my favorite Ghost-type Pokemon.

9) Spiritomb

Spiritomb is on this list mostly for the fact of how it was first originally obtained. The amount of work you had to do in the fourth generation games just to obtain this Pokemon goes into its own backstory. You must talk to 32 players in the Underground area, which can also mean talking to one person 32 times. This activates the Hallowed Tower to have a Spiritomb in the tower while also having an Odd Keystone. Another reason why I love it so much is the fact that it is only weak against Fairy type. So for two full generations, it had no weaknesses.

10) Drampa

Drampa’s attitude is what drew me to have one on my team in Ultra Sun. Drampa basically is me when I will be old; too relaxed and with a white beard. The only part missing will be the Dragon part of course. The type combination is one of my favorites as well; Normal/ Dragon-type with how unique this combo is.

Those were just some of my favorite Pokemon in the almost 900 they have now. Thanks for taking the time to read about some Pokemon!
